Why we’re so Addicted to Being Lazy

A good friend of mine once told me that “it’s so easy to be lazy.” While this is, in fact, a very simple statement, I thought that there was so much more to it.

What does it mean to be “lazy”? When it comes to mind, I automatically think about unproductivity and the endless mundane, yet satisfying routine of sitting in your underwear, on a couch with chips on your belly as you watch a re-run of The Price is Right. Much like Eric in That 70’s Show, we take pride in our much needed days of rest. It is glorified by our generation and it is getting slowly more and more acceptable. With the easy access of the internet, we feel we have become MORE productive by the amount of clicking we do on a daily basis, while in reality, we did it all with no pants on in our mom’s basement while the day passed you by.

We trick ourselves into thinking that computer “work” is real work. Granted, the amount of networking and online jobs has increased over the years, but it has not allowed for equal “real life time” to follow in its shadow. It is normal to realize that human beings are fad followers and like to do things the easy way, therefore, priorities are skewed. Yes, it is easy to sit at your computer and type, but it is also easy to take time out of your day to do something important.

Perhaps it is the changes in our time, but I do believe that we have been missing out on so many things. Let me list a few:

1. Parks.

These magical places are full of wonder. That wooden thing in the distance is what we call “benches.” Don’t be afraid by the vast amount of sunlight and go sit down and enjoy being alive. No seriously, your couch is getting smelly anyways.

2. Books.

Try working your noggin’ a little bit. If you MUST sit on the couch, why not read. It’s fun, I swear.

3. Social Gatherings.

I promise you don’t have to wear what the guy on the left is wearing, but you shouldn’t forget about interacting with your own species. Twittah and Instagaga are great and all, but why not take awkward pictures of your drink together instead of pretending you did something, while in reality you were at home… on your couch. Shame.

4. Activities.

Look at how much fun pink shirt girl is having! Why not join a dance class instructed by a very cheerful looking black man.

So, why is it so addictive to be lazy, and why is it so easy? Because the world has evolved into a techy’s paradise. Our world is click this and click that. Sometimes we need to take a step back and cut the chord with our laptop or smartphone. You might be shocked!
